Orange River

Named for a river that has carried diamonds to the sea for a hundred million years.

Orange River Pty Ltd is an Australian-based gemstone, diamond and jewellery wholesaler, supplying the Australian and international trade with fine natural diamonds, coloured gemstones and professionally manufactured jewellery.

We work exclusively with independent jewellers, manufacturers and designers — providing reliable supply, consistent quality and transparent disclosure, from opening a new trade account through to scaling a production run.

The Name
Orange River references one of the most historically significant diamond-bearing river systems in the world — a respect for geological origin, natural process, and the trade routes that shaped the modern diamond industry.

Early Inspiration

Formative years on the trade routes of Namibia.

The founder of Orange River Pty Ltd spent formative years in Namibia, where early exposure to the local gemstone trade sparked a lasting interest in natural stones and the global supply chain behind them. Roadside gemstone traders, informal markets and small-scale dealers offered practical insight into how rough gemstones are sourced, assessed, valued and traded.

Learning about diamond recovery along the Orange River system, and the development of marine diamond mining along the Namibian coastline, highlighted the scale, structure and discipline required to operate responsibly within the international diamond trade — shaping a long-term appreciation for gemstones as natural materials formed through geology, time and skilled human involvement.

A River’s History

The river holds a central place in the history of diamond mining — from the first inland discovery to the marine fields that remain among the most valuable diamond resources on earth.

1867 — Hopetown

The Eureka Diamond

A 21.25-carat diamond was discovered in alluvial gravels on the river’s banks — the first documented diamond find on the Orange River, confirming that diamonds lay far inland and sparking a prospecting rush along the entire system.

Early 1870s

The Kimberley Pipes

Continued prospecting led to the discovery of the Kimberley diamond pipes, founding large-scale commercial diamond mining. Thousands of diamonds were recovered from the river’s alluvial deposits, where natural water movement concentrated well-formed, high-quality stones.

Over Geological Time

The Marine Diamond Fields

The Orange River has transported diamonds from inland sources downstream into the Atlantic, forming the coastal and marine fields of the Namibian coastline — recognised for producing some of the world’s most exceptional diamonds.
